Yesterday i picked up the first installment of vegetables from our local CSA in Waltham, which was all manner of green leafies (more on that later), plus pick your own snap peas. Which i am now eating while working on the computer, and words do not express how delightful i find that fresh-pea flavor. I will not buy peas fresh in any market, because they are always stale and starchy by the time you get them, and so I rarely get to enjoy the treasured treat of my childhood, fresh raw spring peas. But these little guys are just lovely! Yay.
I’m eating raw peas as we speak (ok, so we’re not actually speaking… but you know what I mean). I was delighted to find them at the farmers’ market this week – they’re one of my top 10 favorite foods of all time!
Best of luck for the impending excitement – wish we could be there to help celebrate.
We used to grow snap peas in our backyard, which is why fresh snap peas remind me of my miserable, humiliating, extra shitty childhood.
What CSA do you use? I’m looking for a good one that will deliver or do drop-offs close to the Uptown area (I don’t have a car). Suggestions?
hi Katherine — unfortunately I’ve moved to Boston and I don’t live in Chicago anymore, so i don’t have a good line on a chicago-based CSA. Honestly, i had all i could handle with a few well-timed trips to the Green City Market in Lincoln Park — gorgeous veg and really good fruits. The market where i live now in MA is much much smaller, so we decided to try out the CSA option this year. Good luck whichever way you get your produce!
Ah, sugar snaps! I love them. They bring back memories of sitting on my almost-grandma’s porch in a West Virginia holler, petting cats & enjoying her flower garden as I munched sugar snaps with hummus. Will have to look for some at the farmer’s market right before we head down there this summer.
